SUMMARY:THE ONE
DESCRIPTION:SHOWCASE / Q&ATHE ONEThursday\, February 26th | 7:00pm \n\n\n\nat The Creative Space: 121 E 34th St. in Garden City \n\n\n\n$10 | General Admissionfree | Surel’s Place Sustaining Members (with Special Passcode) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\nIn order to love somebody else\, you have to love yourself first. That’s what her mother once told her when she was 8 years old. Thirty years later\, Andrea wonders\, was she right? The self help gurus affirm it too! In order to find The One\, you not only have to love yourself\, but fall madly in love with yourself! Oh God…. In The One\, multidisciplinary performer Andrea Parson grapples with the notion of self love in an effort to find that special and elusive someone. A romantic partner\, herself\, something of the spiritual and unseen world\, or maybe The One is sitting right in front of her! Or maybe it’s a mangy cat who goes by the name of Couts.  \n\n\n\nThrough evocative movement\, storytelling\, and a clown sensibility\, Andrea juxtaposes her modern day search for love with images of a 14th century medieval anchoress. Who? You know\, those radical women who lived enclosed inside a small cell attached to a church as a bride of Christ. For real! Based on feedback and reflection from its initial performance in Portland this past summer\, Andrea has used the Surel’s Place residency to reimagine how she can tell her own autobiographical story through the further development of the Anchoress (whom she’s named Anna). \n\n\n\nAndrea invites the audience to join her as she weaves through excerpts from the show- in and out of a sacred\, comedic and personal reflection about love and loving. \n\n\n\nBIOGRAPHY \n\n\n\nAndrea Parson is a multidisciplinary theater artist born and raised in Hillsboro\, Oregon.  Andrea pursued dance training at the Joffrey Ballet School\, San Francisco Conservatory of Dance\, and Loyola Marymount University\, where she earned a BA in Dance in 2009. Following graduation\, she joined Northwest Dance Project in Portland\, Oregon\, where she was awarded the Princess Grace Dance Fellowship in 2010. Over 11 years with the company\, she performed nationally and internationally\, garnering acclaim for her portrayal of dramatic characters such as Hedda Gabler and Carmen.  \n\n\n\nNow based in Portland\, Andrea creates and performs original solo and ensemble work that merges contemporary dance\, physical theater\, storytelling\, and humor. Her recent award-winning solo\, You Can’t Be Serious\, was presented at BodyVox Dance Center (2023)\, Oregon Fringe Festival (2024)\, and Hollywood Fringe Festival (2024). Andrea presented You Can’t Be Serious at the Fall United Solo Festival 2024 in New York City where she received an award for best physical theater. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to Andrea Parson’s Residency Sponsors: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis programming is supported in part by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts:

Surel’s Place is pleased to present Alumna Artist-in-Residence Reeb Willms with Caleb Klauder\, a country roots music duo bringing soulful harmonies\, driving dance tunes\, and classic original songs. It’s been 6 years since Reeb’s artist residency at Surel’s Place where she led harmony singing workshops and developed her own original songwriting. Join Surel’s Place at the Visual Arts Collective to listen to heartfelt music\, tunes both new and old\, and celebrate hardworking artists and our vibrant arts community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS TITLE SPONSOR: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS SUPPORTING SPONSOR: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT CALEB AND REEB \n\n\n\nCaleb Klauder and Reeb Willms live in the San Juan Islands of Washington\, though until recently\, home was Portland\, OR. They are foundational to the exceptional old-time and country music scene in the Pacific NW with the Caleb Klauder Reeb Willms Country Band and their membership in the Foghorn Stringband\, of which Caleb was a founding member. Charismatic performers\, they bring their unique set of talents to the stage with an eye towards good times and an ear towards the deepest songs and tunes. \n\n\n\nCaleb Klauder and Reeb Willms both originally hail from Washington State: Caleb from the coastal islands\, and Reeb from the high desert plateau. The two have come together in music and are hailed as some of the most compelling musicians making country roots music in America today. When these two sing together\, their honest incantations leave us spell-bound and smiling. \n\n\n\nTheir repertoire is made up of original songs and tunes as well as gems from American roots repertoires\, and the music they make is Americana in the truest sense of the word. Music is clearly in their blood. Caleb and Reeb’s originals and interpretations of songs have been covered and recorded by many performers and their musical presence reaches into a diverse and loyal fanbase\, giving creedance to the impact that this duo has on their listeners. Pillars of the Northwest music scene\, they carry the torch of their music around the world\, and can be found touring as a duo\, as well as with the Caleb Klauder Reeb Willms Country Band\, their bluegrass band the Cali Cutups\, and with the Foghorn Stringband. Their fans exude admiration for the timeless sound that these two produce\, capturing the essence of American roots music.

SUMMARY:Concert: DEATH'S MOTIF
DESCRIPTION:CONCERTDEATH’S MOTIFThursday\, July 31st \n\n\n\n\n\nMusician and composer Siobhan Cassidy Robinson has been writing music during this residency that goes beyond the concert stage. She is conceiving a stage production set in the heart of mid-1900s New York\, during the golden age of Broadway\, where director Theodore “Teddy” Blackwood is preparing for his most ambitious play yet! Beneath the glittering surface of the theater\, something sinister is unfolding: actors and staff disappear–or worse\, turn up dead! The composer and music director\, Edmund Vale\, secretly uses these dark events as inspiration for his compositions. Unable to finish the final song due to his growing infatuation with the lead actress\, Celine Dubois\, the show is at risk\, and the mystery surrounding the theater grows darker. With the support of local musicians forming a quartet\, Cassidy will share some of the immersive music at the core of each character. \n\n\n\nThis programming is supported in part by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:strikethrough 48: a performance installation
DESCRIPTION:Artist-in-Residence Maxine Flasher-Düzgüneş presents an evening-length installation on the three-dimensionality of erasure poetry and its cross pollination with the disciplines of dance\, animation\, sound\, and scenic design.  \n\n\n\nOriginal poems of Surel’s Place workshop participants will be displayed and opportunities will arise for attendees to strikethrough portions of text to create new ones. What remains of the poems will change the landscape of the space… \n\n\n\nThe installation will culminate with a solo performance in response to “strikethrough 48\,” an erasure poem about ending one’s life in a country flooding with natural beauty but drought-ridden when it comes to services for the mentally ill. In collaboration with Taipei based animators Jade Lien & Irene Lin\, whose “drawn-on-film” technique will be projected at intervals throughout the evening\, along with ambient sound by Salt Lake City based composer Michael Wall. \n\n\n\nA talk-back at 8pm will discuss the impact of interactive media and how both language and dance can be malleable and ephemeral in their attempts to touch the hearts and minds of those who encounter them.  \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Four Riffs for a Sailor
DESCRIPTION:The Odyssey without Odysseus? Four Riffs for a Sailor is play that retells the story of the Odyssey through the interlocking monologues (and sometimes dialogues) of four women in it–Calypso\, Nausicaa\, Circe\, and Penelope–with no Odysseus\, at least not onstage\, though of course he gets talked about. Playwright Monica Raymond arrived at this residency with about 2/3 of the script written and is spending the first three weeks writing the final third\, and then playing with the pieces\, cutting and pasting\, and finding the right order. She is spending the week before this event with five local actors rehearsing and exploring the text to be shared with you in its first voyage. \n\n\n\nCalypso is the “whore of peace\,” the goddess who heals men from the psychic wounds of war enough so that they’re fit–well\, fit enough\, anyway–to return to the civilian world. Nausicaa is a child\, just over the edge of puberty\, seduced by Odysseus’s stories and adventures. Circe is the self-contained artist who nonetheless finds herself vulnerable to Odysseus. And Penelope\, whose story we think we know the best of all of these\, her fidelity\, her efforts to stave off the suitors\, her blessed reunion with Odysseus at the end– here turns out to be quite different.  \n\n\n\nLocal author\, screenwriter\, and Surel’s Place panelist Samantha Silva responded to Monica’s residency application by writing “Raymond’s CV is dizzyingly extensive and impressive. I wanted to like the writing so much…….And I LOVED the writing. It’s crisp\, poetic\, contemporary. Such a brilliant idea for a play. I had tears in my eyes at the end of Calypso’s last monologue.” \n\n\n\nFeaturing:Elke MyersJanet LoJason HaskinsKatie PrestonKiala Siman \n\n\n\nCasting by Buffie Main\, Artistic Director of Alley Repertory TheaterAlley Rep is delighted to incubate and support Surel’s Place artists. \n\n\n\n\n\nGET TICKETS: surelsplace.ludus.com\n\n\n\nThis programming is supported in part by the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF)\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:McKenna Esteb: Show & Tell
DESCRIPTION:What is emotional freedom? McKenna Esteb sees it as the ability to identify difficult emotions and learn from them – liberating yourself from negative feelings rather than attaching to them. Rather than predict the genre of music she will create during her residency at Surel’s Place\, McKenna is challenging herself to write a set of songs by letting the music flow nautually and see what inspires her. She will share this new music with voice and piano during this performance followed by a Q & A.At the age of 21\, McKenna Esteb was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). “I recognized recurring patterns in my life that I felt I had no control over. I disliked myself deeply. This affected my self worth\, relationships\, and my ability to create.” Once diagnosed\, she started to connect to her music on a much deeper level and started to create more freely and frequently. This evening of new music is a continuation of that journey and the discovery of where emotional freedom and creative freedom intersect. \n\n\nMcKenna EstebSeptember-October\n\n\n\n\nWhile not unheard of to have a local artist in residence at Surel's Place\, it doesn't happen very often. McKenna Esteb grew up in Snoqualmie Wash. — where her love for music began — performing in talent shows\, at coffee shops and restaurants around the greater Seattle area. Throughout her career\, she has called both Austin\, Texas\, and Boise\, ID home. Since releasing her first single in 2019\, her career has taken many different forms. Pivoting from 2-3 hour cover shows at coffee shops\, she began performing her own musical project at Treefort\, Flipside\, Boise Pride\, and opening for touring bands like The Suffers. Her vocal style is heavily influenced by the likes of Norah Jones\, Etta James\, and Amy Winehouse. The roots of her music have soul and funk influences mixed into a nice cocktail of pop/modern rock. Her music is vulnerable\, direct\, and influenced by her life experiences. In most recent projects\, she wrote about Row v. Wade being overturned and donated all profits received from streams to Northwest Abortion Access Fund. With songs ranging from power ballads to rocking out\, she is guaranteed to keep her music relatable and raw. \n\n\n\nOur selection panelists universally recommended Esteb for the residency\, even over out-of-town applicants. Eric Alexander\, one of these panelists\, wrote that\, "I feel McKenna is poised to do great things\, I hope a residency would allow her to move to the next phase of her creativity." And that's what she hopes to do. \n\n\n\nDuring her residency\, Esteb led a workshop on journaling. She shared her experience with journaling: personal tips\, how to workshop creative ideas\, and how to release tension in the body through journaling. For her culminating event\, Esteb performed the songs created during her residency and told the stories behind each one. \n\n\n\nWatch an interview Esteb gave during her residency with Idaho News 6.

SUMMARY:An Evening With Eilen Jewell: Surel's Place Summer Fundraising Garden Party
DESCRIPTION:Surel’s Place is honored to host the woman American Songwriter has called “one of America’s most intriguing\, creative\, and idiosyncratic voices” at our summer fundraiser — featuring both an intimate concert and an even more limited number of seats at an exclusive family-style meal in Surel’s own dining room. \n\n\n\nIdaho native Eilen Jewell has shared bills with the likes of Lucinda Williams\, Loretta Lynn\, Mavis Staples\, Wanda Jackson\, George Jones\, Emmylou Harris\, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Rolling Stone lauded her “clever writing\,” while NPR declared that she has a “sweet and clear voice with a killer instinct lurking beneath the shiny surface.” The Washington Post mused that “if Neko Case\, Madeleine Peyroux and Billie Holiday had a baby girl who grew up to front a rockabilly band\, she’d probably sound a lot like Eilen Jewell.” You can learn more about Eilen and her music on her website\, eilenjewell.com. \n\n\n\nEilen is donating her time and talents to raise money for the arts and artists through Surel’s Place\, and we are grateful that we get to extend this unique chance to hear her deeply personal work in a rare solo performance. \n\n\n\nWe are equally grateful for our presenting sponsors at Holland & Hart for the support that is making this evening possible. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the general admission tickets available below\, a limited number of seats are available for an intimate family-style dinner of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine catered by our Garden City neighbors at Wepa Cafe. You can purchase seats for dinner and the show here.

SUMMARY:Sound Topography: A Live Performance by The Wind and All Around Cowboy
DESCRIPTION:The Wind is a podcast by Fil Corbitt (they/them)\, made at a handmade desk in the Sierra Nevada. This performance will mix script reading\, interview clips and immersive soundscapes to create a full audio experience. Fil has performed The Wind at Treefort the last three years\, and their work has appeared on NPR\, CBC\, Outside Magazine\, 99% Invisible\, Snap Judgement and The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering\, among many others. \n\n\n\nYou can only hear the wind in relation to what it’s scraping up against. Fil’s podcast The Wind works that way too: though it’s usually made from a quiet desk in the woods in a mountain wilderness\, the show often touches on topics more loud and confronting. From the politics of sound (Whip Law: an exploration of Reno’s houseless whip culture\, aired nationally)\, to queer spaces (They/Them)\, radical Brazilian punk\, train yards\, and rodeo chutes\, Fil’s work aims to observe and meditate on the way sound shapes our lives both overtly and ethereally. You can learn more at TheWind.org. \n\n\n\nThe evening will also feature local Boise artist\, All Around Cowboy. In live shows blending folk music and performance poetry with kabbalistic mysticism\, his work explores alternative Americanas. Both his music and his poetry are structured around loops: layered chords and ambiences as well as repeating names and images. His other projects include the podcast Sage Country Fragments\, the found sound project The Living Room Orchestra\, and the stage plays Has This Ever Happened To You? and Administrative Leave. \n\n\n\nFree!

SUMMARY:From Eternity's Yurt: A Night of Poetry\, Philosophy and Music
DESCRIPTION:Poet Diane Raptosh returns to Surel’s Place with Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt\, a chapbook of poems featuring 22 sonnets. Each of the poems springs from a quotation by the British moral philosopher Mary Midgley\, who has a reputation as one of the most expansive and compelling moral philosophers of the twentieth century. “She thinks very much like a poet\,” Diane says of Mary Midgley. “The themes are very down to earth and contemporary: the environment\, animal rights\, civic unease.” \n\n\n\nDiane has invited Greg McElwain\, Professor and Chair of Philosophy and Religious Studies at The College of Idaho\, to join her. McElwain published Mary Midgley: An Introduction\, which is the first substantive introduction to Midgley’s influential philosophy on the human condition. Joining both Diane and Greg is their musician friend Scott Knickerbocker who will punctuate the words with tunes on the guitar. \n\n\n\nFree!
