DESCRIPTION:WORKSHOPRELIEF PRINTINGSaturday\, June 27th | 1:00pm – 4:00pm \n\n\n\n$35  |  Sustaining Member (with Special Passcode)$45  |  General RegistrationPartial scholarships available by request to info@surelsplace.org \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\nEach participant will receive a 4 by 4 inch soft carving material\, and Artist-in-Residence Camilla Taylor will teach you how to design a high contrast image\, carve it\, and stamp it. Then\, the participants will use their stamps to create a large-scale pattern\, collaborating with each other on layout and color palette to create a repeating pattern using their own carvings as the design motifs. Participants will go home with a collaborative print and their carving \n\n\n\nBiography: \n\n\n\nCamilla Taylor (CA) was raised in Provo\, Utah\, and is based in Los Angeles\, California. In 2025\, they presented Unkindness at Track 16 Gallery in Los Angeles\, an exhibition examining mystical transformation through destruction. The exhibition included a sculpture that survived the complete burning of Taylor’s home and studio in the Eaton Fire earlier that year\, embedding material endurance and change directly into the work. That same year\, Taylor was a ceramic artist in residence at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Residency and was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Artist Fellowship.  \n\n\n\nWorking across glass\, printmaking\, metal\, fabric\, and other materials\, Taylor’s practice investigates interiority\, the uncanny. The mortal body recurs as a central motif\, explored both as a literal form and as a site of seduction and repulsion. Works such as Unrelenting\, a cast glass sculpture depicting a human foot subjected to the forces of frostbite\, reflect Taylor’s interest in vulnerability\, endurance\, and the thresholds where the body and mind transform under pressure. \n\n\n\nTaylor has been on faculty at UCLA and Occidental College\, teaching sculpture\, drawing\, and printmaking.

DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT & ART TALKPENITENTSaturday\, July 11th | 7:00pm – 10:00pm \n\n\n\nfree \n\n\n\nArtist-in-Residence Camilla Taylor focused their residency on a series of drawings referring to the myth of St. Mary of Egypt. She is depicted covered in her own hair after decades of an ascetic life wandering through the desert. Presumably\, even her clothes disintegrated. Rather than decades\, Taylor lost nearly everything in mere moments. All their artwork and possessions at their Altadena home and studio were destroyed in the Eaton Fire of 2025. They recently curated the group exhibit My House Burned Down at the Track 16 Gallery in Downtown LA\, which closed in June\, 2025\, and in a solo exhibition and catalog at Track 16 Gallery in East Hollywood\, Unkindness\, that dealt with themes of atheist mysticism\, which closed in January 2026. \n\n\n\n“This loss and displacement changed the way I make art\,” Taylor says\, “My work became more fragile and more precious.” However\, hair is a theme they’ve used often as a motif in their work. It is a symbol of the body and a material that is both deeply corporeal and also has near magical qualities in many cultures\, controlled in how it’s cut and worn and revealed. Taylor references hair also as a symbol of femininity\, and their own ambivalence towards it. This will be explored in drawings\, prints\, and sculptures referring back to the myth of St. Mary of Egypt\, and the larger corporeal and quasi magical qualities that hair represents. \n\n\n\nAlso available to see by appointment July 11th – 13th by emailing camilla.a.taylor@gmail.com. Participants then complete a brief written exercise\, turning a vivid personal memory into one or two concise sentences. Using pencils\, index cards\, and colored markers\, each participant sketches three images (a beginning\, a middle\, and an end) that capture the memory’s arc. A group discussion follows on how framing\, scale\, and negative space shape emotional tone. In the second hour participants refine their panels\, add single line captions for dialogue or sound\, and place the cards on a communal Story Wall so individual narratives can converse. The final hour is devoted to a walk-through of the wall where each storyteller narrates their sequence and receives guided feedback on clarity\, pacing\, and sensory detail. Everyone departs with a concise visual blueprint that can seed a short film\, graphic narrative\, or written vignette while highlighting shared themes of place\, identity\, and transformation. \n\n\n\nAges 16 and up \n\n\n\nNote: “Sinema” is “cinema” in Haitian Creole and al’ikens Plancher’s artistic brand.  \n\n\n\nBIOGRAPHY: \n\n\n\nal’ikens Plancher is a writer-director from Port-au-Prince\, Haiti. It explores the forgotten history of Haitian refugees detained at Guantanamo Bay in the 1990s. It’s a great way to explore the local art scene\, with exhibitions\, readings\, and performances at various locations. \n\n\n\nOur October First Friday specially features the 5-Year Anniversary of Illuminated! where local artists project artwork throughout the District\, lighting up the night from 7:30pm – 9:30pm. Illuminated! offers immersive experiences from artists of all different backgrounds who produce projection and light art for the public to navigate through and explore. \n\n\n\nILLUMINATED! DESCRIPTION:BOSCO BOISE OPEN STUDIO TOURELI CRAVENOctober 10th | 10:00am – 6:00pmfree \n\n\n\n\nSurel’s Place honors the legacy of artist Surel Mitchell (a founding member of BOSCO) by offering her home and studio to artists of promise\, and of renown\, for month-long residencies and professionally supported art events. In this inspiring live/work space\, artists of all disciplines are given time and freedom to reflect\, create\, and share their work with the community. This year\, Surel’s Place celebrates it’s 15th season\, and will have Eli Craven in residence during the BOSCO Open Studios Tour. \n\n\n\n\nBoise Open Studios Collective Organization features over 125 Treasure Valley artists working in painting\, sculpture\, photography\, ceramics\, printmaking\, jewelry\, textiles\, mosaic\, collage\, assemblage\, digital images\, and glass. Our main event\, the Open Studios Tour\, occurs during the first two weekends of October each year\, with half of the artists opening their studios on the first weekend and the rest on the second. This event aims to enhance public understanding of the artistic process\, foster connections\, and build community.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: FOUND FAMILIES
DESCRIPTION:WORKSHOPFOUND FAMILIESSaturday\, October 17th | 1:00pm – 4:00pm$45 \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\nThis collage workshop with Artist-in-Residence Eli Craven focuses on re-interpreting family image archives through alterations and combinations with additional found and made materials. We explore family photography and portraiture\, the meanings they carry\, and how we can transform them through these added materials. You may use additional materials such as thread\, fabric\, papers\, documents\, wood\, mirrors\, metals\, etc. As we create collages and tell stories\, we will also discuss the meaning behind the combinations of these materials and how images change over time. \n\n\n\nYou are encouraged to bring some of your own materials to work with: copies and test strips\, in addition to originals of photographs intended to use in the workshop. A variety of found photographic images and various sources will also be available. \n\n\n\nPartial scholarships available by request to info@surelsplace.org. \n\n\n\nBIOGRAPHY \n\n\n\nAlthough currently based in Indiana\, Eli Craven was raised in Idaho. “Returning to Idaho for this project feels appropriate given the origins of my relationship to photography and a return to the subject matter of my childhood\,” Eli says. In his childhood home\, magazines and movies were censored\, select films and TV shows were forbidden\, sexuality and death were seldom discussed. The power images hold was discovered through scrutinizing forbidden magazine collections\, daytime soap operas\, and movies. The impetus of his practice resides in this desire to see\, only to discover nothing shocking. Instead\, seemingly mundane imagery is isolated and fragmented\, presenting a narrative exploring the image’s role in processes of socialization. \n\n\n\nEli left Idaho with a BFA in photography from Boise State back in 2011. He went on to pursue an MFA in photography at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Currently an Associate Professor of Photography at Purdue University\, his work has been widely exhibited and published. Most recently his work has been exhibited at Kant Gallery in Copenhagen\, Denmark; KlompChing Gallery in Brooklyn\, New York; and at the Blue Sky\, Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts in Portland\, Oregon.

DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT & ART TALKA PLEA FOR TENDERNESSThursday\, October 29th | 7:00pm – 8:30pmfree \n\n\n\nIn this project Eli Craven aims to position the viewer as a collaborator or partner in the physical experience of the work. Viewers are invited to alter photographic compositions through a series of kinetic elements and reflective materials\, including sliding wood panels\, hinged doors\, and movable peepholes. The viewer must engage and activate the framing components to reveal the photographic image\, potentially provoking the desire to see what is hidden within. Participation is integral to this project\, with entire scenes rendered incomplete without the viewer’s touch and imagination filling the gaps and visualizing what lies beneath the surface of the photograph\, or behind the veil. \n\n\n\nAlthough the works exist within the canon of photography\, they are sculptural objects that utilize the photograph as part of their construction. Eli’s work started with an obsession for photography and its materials and that fixation remains at the core of his practice.
