I painted the view looking out from Surel’s living room at different times under different lighting, inspired by Monet’s haystack series.
At Surel’s Place, I made landscape paintings but also explored more abstract ways to approach a painting. I found and experimented with a bunch of supplies in the studio – things I did not use in my practice at all. Looking back, I started to explore the physicality of materials at Surel’s Place, and my current work acknowledges the sensational and perceptional properties of materiality and then transforms materials from their original forms and purpose and presents them within new contexts.
