“Residencies grant artists the rare gift of enough time and space to try everything that occurs to them. During the month I spent at Surel’s Place, I tried thinning oil paint to the consistency of ink for the first time. Something clicked, and I’m still painting this way today. I love the immediacy of the liquid color, how responsive it is to the motions of my hand and arm, and the way it allows me to capture the essence of change and movement in the natural world.”

“I think what I’m getting at with these layered paintings is the feeling of walking through a forest, of being surrounded and immersed, the sensation that everything around you is equally important and equally alive.”
