Jenny Wu

(New York) Artist Website Artist-in-Residence May Residency Year: 2013

Biography

One of our earliest artist-in-residence, Jenny Wu was born in Nanjing, China, and educated in studio art at both William Smith College and American University.

Her exhibition here was just her third solo or two-person show — a list that numbered 15 by the start of 2023 and has included galleries from several states along the Eastern Seaboard.

“At Surel’s Place, I made landscape paintings but also explored more abstract ways to approach a painting,” she has said. “I found and experimented with a bunch of supplies in the studio – things I did not use in my practice at all. Looking back, I started to explore the physicality of materials at Surel’s Place.”

Now based out of Washington, D.C., Wu has has been awarded fellowships from Vermont Studio Center and the Pollock Krasner Foundation and is represented by the Morton Fine Art.

“My work acknowledges and embraces the property of the material – both sensational and perceptional – and then provides the material a new context. I sculpt with paint. I pour latex paint one thick layer at a time, let each layer dry, and repeat the process thirty to forty times. I then cut into the dried layer paint, reveal the cross section, and use those dried paint layers to sculpt.”
