Biography

Shongedzai “Shongee” Matangira (TX) is a Zimbabwean-born textile and beadwork artist working at the intersection of wearable art, craft, and sculpture. Largely self-taught, her practice centers hand-stitched beadwork, color systems, and tactile storytelling to explore memory, identity, and community. Her work has been presented in fashion and art contexts including New York Fashion Week, community exhibitions, and educational workshops.

There is a cultural belief in her native Zimbabwe that if you do not operate in alignment with the meaning of your given name, you will not succeed. Her name, Shongedzai, means to beautify, decorate, and adorn.

“I resisted that meaning for a long time,” Shongee explains, “but every path I took eventually led me back to art. It was not until I fully committed to my practice that my father told me his mother had been the community beader for their village. She created pieces for anyone who needed them. Learning that grounded me in a way I did not expect and made my practice feel inherited rather than invented, reinforcing a lifelong connection to community-first creation.”
